The main shopping areas in Jaisalmer are Sadar Bazaar, Sonaron Ka Bas, Manak Chowk, Pansari Bazaar, Gandhi Darshan, Zila Khadi Gramodan Parishad, Khadi Gramyodyog Bhawan (Seema Gram) and Rajasthali - the Govt. shop, selling handicrafts.
Within the Jaisalmer Fort complex is a big shop 'Light of the East', which sells crystals and rare mineral specimen, including Zeolite. Adjoining, the Fort is Manak Chowk, the main market place of Jaisalmer. Known for bargaining, the market offers a variety of local handicraft items.
A number of traditional Rajasthani handicrafts are available in Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer is famous for embroidery, Rajasthani mirror work, rugs, blankets, antiques and old stonework. There are lots of shops but try to venture in government owned and operated ones. This will save you extra dollars that would have gone in the pockets of guides in the form of commission. If you want to buy fabrics such as Tie-dye and other fabrics, try the government operated Khadi Gramuddyog Bhavan.
Jaisalmer is famous for its embroidery and other exquisite handicrafts. Just outside the fort is Manak Chowk, the marketplace of Jaisalmer, famous for local products and a great place to get into the Indian way of shopping and do a spot of bargaining. Jaisalmer is also a good place for buying exquisitely embroidered garments with inlaid mirror work in a brilliant mosaic of colours or silver jewellery, stonework, finely cut antiques. carpets made from camel hair, and colourful silk and cotton cloth.
Tie-dye and other fabrics are made at the Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan (Seemagram), can be found not too far from the fort. One traveller warns that you should watch out for silver items bought in Jaisalmer and elsewhere in the country as the metal may be mixed with bronze to make it seem heavier. In the fort, on the laneway leading up to the Jain temples, is a fascinating shop called the ' Light of the East '. It sells crystal and rare mineral specimens worth buying.
